Jay Bird scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes to set Boreham Wood on course for a 3-1 victory over Kidderminster Harriers at Meadow Park on Tuesday night. The win extends the club's lead at the summit of the National League to seven points, with the team now on 29 points from 11 unbeaten games.
Bird opened the scoring after nine minutes, finishing from close range after a pass from Zak Brunt. He doubled his tally just seven minutes later, capitalising on an error to fire home from 12 yards. Kidderminster pulled a goal back through Lewis Walker ten minutes after the break, but the visitors' hopes were dented when Richard Faakye was sent off for conceding a penalty in the 71st minute. Jack Wint saved Zak Brunt's resulting spot-kick, but substitute Ben Whitfield sealed the points for Boreham Wood a minute later, tapping in after a low cross from Cameron Bush.
The result maintains Boreham Wood's perfect start to the season and their formidable home form. Kidderminster's night was further soured by an injury to captain Angus MacDonald, who was forced off before half-time.
Luke Gunter had a quiet night in the Boreham Wood goal, protected by a defence that has conceded just 12 league goals all season.
Boreham Wood's next test comes at Meadow Park on Saturday against fourth-placed Altrincham. The visitors are in strong form themselves, having won four of their last five league games. The Wood, who sit top with 29 points from 11 unbeaten games, will be looking to extend their two-game winning run. Ben Whitfield, who scored against Kidderminster and netted a brace at Solihull, will be a key threat.
